Spelling Bee
Students in grades 1-3 and 4-8 can compete in a Spelling Bee for the chance to advance and represent their school at the HCLS Spelling Bee regional competition.
About the Spelling Bee
The HCLS Spelling Bee (grades 4-8) and BumbleBee (grades 1-3) are Presented by Howard County Library System and Howard County Public School System. This oral bee is organized under the rules of the Scripps National Spelling Bee and our regional champion advances to represent Howard County at the Scripps Nation Spelling Bee each May. Local public, private, and parochial schools are all invited to enroll in the HCLS Bee program for free and host classroom and school-level bees to determine one winner and one alternate speller to advance and represent their school at the HCLS Spelling Bee regional competition each March. Resources to prepare spellers and facilitate classroom and school Bees are provided by Scripps and HCLS. The annual competition takes place at an area high school and the winner and 1st runner up receive award checks and memorabilia as the winner moves on to the national level.
