DIY Collection
Support and promote hands-on learning. Items included in this collection are for automotive repair, household repair gardening, crafts, kitchen, outdoor adventure and more.
Borrowing Information
- Loan Period: 1 week
- Borrowing Limit: 12 items per visit, 24 maximum
- Hold Limit: 4 simultaneous requests
- Renewals: 2 automatic renewals if not requested by another customer
- Requestable Online: Yes, by selecting Elkridge Branch as the pickup location
- Overdue Fines: $2 per day, $30 maximum; seniors exempt

Special Instructions
- Anyone 21 or older who lives, works, or attends school in Maryland may apply for an HCLS DIY library card by bringing a current photo ID that can be used to verify age, such as a driver’s license or state-issued ID.
- The DIY library card may only be used to borrow items from the DIY Education Center.
- The DIY library card expires one year from the date of issue.
- A liability waiver and release must be signed as part of the initial card application, and again each year the DIY library card is renewed.
Returning
- Please clean all items when finished. Items from the DIY collection must be returned to the Elkridge Branch DIY side entrance (no appointment necessary).
- DIY Education Center items may not be returned to any HCLS book drop, any other HCLS branch, or other library systems in Maryland.
- Sewing machines should be returned to the branch (Elkridge or Glenwood) from which they were borrowed.
Reserving
- Customers may reserve materials from the DIY Education Center collection online at hclibrary.org, over the phone, or in person. A total of four items may be requested at one time.
- When placing an online request, select DIY at Elkridge Branch as the pickup location.
- Customers will be notified by email, USPS, or phone when requested items become available for pickup.
- DIY items on hold will be held in the branch for seven days.
Reserved DIY materials may not be sent to other HCLS branches.
- Fines are charged for each day an item is late.
- No fines are charged on days HCLS is closed.
- If fines equal $10 or more, customers cannot borrow or renew any library materials until the fines have been cleared.
Fines may be paid in person or using a self-check machine.
DIY materials must be returned in the same condition in which they were borrowed. - The full replacement cost for each item, plus a standard processing fee, will be charged for each lost, damaged, or stolen item.
- HCLS cannot accept replacements of lost or damaged items from the DIY Education Center collection.
