Battle of the Books
A lively game show-style competition for area 5th-grade students from private, public, and parochial schools. This event is also a new rite of passage for students in our area. Each team reads a free set of books provided by HCLS and show up to test their knowledge while answering questions from the featured book list. This is a celebration of reading, teamwork, sportsmanship, and integrity. The huge dance party, category awards, virtual author Q&A, and prizes are added bonuses! All of this is made possible by our generous sponsors and supporters.
About Battle of the Books
Howard County Library System and Howard County Public School System’s Battle of the Books is an A+ Partners in Education (HCLS and HCPSS) academic competition for Howard County 5th grade students. This exciting, fun opportunity to read great books, work with a team, and be creative culminates with a live competition and epic dance party at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Teams include three to five students from the same public, private, parochial, or home school. There is one adult coach and an optional adult assistant coach for each team. Teams read a free set of 10 – 12 pre-selected books and meet to practice, prepare costumes, and create their team poster for the April event. Teams demonstrate their skills and put their knowledge of the books to the test by answering live questions at the event. Top-scoring teams receive awards, category winners receive certificates, and all participants receive certificates. This is made possible by our generous sponsors and supporters.
